Car-Theft Suspect Killed In Burbank Officer-Involved Shooting

BURBANK (CBSLA.com) — A car-theft pursuit ended in a deadly officer-involved shooting early Thursday, officials said.

The chase began at 1:40 a.m. when police began following a gold Mercury Sable on the 134 Freeway, near Cahuenga Boulevard, and ended about six minutes later in a cul-de-sac on Evergreen Street and W. National Avenue in Burbank, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

The suspect vehicle hit "the passenger side of the patrol unit," said Sgt. Frank Preciado. "The passenger officer withdrew his firearm and fired at the suspect."

"I saw it end here with screeching . . . and then I heard, 'Pop, pop, pop, pop', and I knew that was someone firing," said witness Britta Hamrick.

The suspect exited his vehicle and a short foot pursuit ensued down an alley, officials said.

"Officers took the suspect into custody and we did have Burbank Fire Department respond to the scene where they pronounced the suspect dead," Sgt. Preciado said.

No officers were injured.

It was unknown if the suspect was armed. His identity was not released.
