Pursuit Suspect Arrested Following Standoff In Corona

CORONA (CBSLA.com) — A man who led officers on a wild pursuit that ended hours later in a standoff along the 91 Freeway in Orange County was in custody Friday.

According to the Orange County Sheriff's Department, John Lopez, 26, was booked on suspicion of felony evading.

The chase began around 6:20 p.m. Thursday in Compton when officers linked a black Mercedes-Benz to an attempted murder case that took place about two weeks ago.

Lopez caused a traffic nightmare along the freeway, stranding thousands of people in their cars.

Eventually, California Highway Patrol officers threw out spike strips and the Mercedes-Benz came to a smoking stop.

A two-hour standoff then took place between Lopez and a SWAT team.

Smoke bombs were thrown into his vehicle and a police dog moved in to assist.

The K-9 officer bit Lopez when he was taken into custody. He was transported to a hospital for treatment of the wound.

According to deputies, Lopez is being held on $75,000 bail. It remains unclear if he will face attempted murder charges.
