Purse Stolen From Woman Lying In Street After Being Struck By Car In Highland

HIGHLAND (CBSLA.com) — Authorities said they were searching Wednesday for a thief who stole a 72-year-old woman's purse just after she was struck by a car while walking in Highland, but later said the woman's purse turned up at her home.

San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies were called out to a pedestrian crash in the area of Baseline Street and McKinley Avenue on April 12 and found the woman lying in the street, surrounded by several bystanders, sheriff's officials said.

The woman had suffered visible but minor injuries, but officials say she was confused as to how the crash happened. The driver of the car stopped and cooperated with the deputies, who determined the woman was unsafely crossing the street when she was struck, according to authorities.

The woman told police she believed her purse had been stolen. During a follow up conversation, the woman's daughter said her mother was suffering the beginnings of dementia and had actually left the purse at home, according to San Bernardino County sheriff's Deputy Kyle Glozer.
