Protesters With Anti-Police Attire Attend Santa Ana City Council Meeting

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — The Santa Ana City Council has met again, nearly two weeks after a meeting was cut short over a man's refusal to remove a cap with an obscene message.

Wearing T-shirts with police expletives and armed with letters from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), demonstrators walked into an already packed meeting at Santa Ana City Hall on Tuesday evening.

"[The letter] just basically says that you guys can't censor people at City Council meetings," one attendee told KCAL9's Stacey Butler. "You can't do that."

Two weeks ago, the city's mayor canceled the meeting after a man refused to remove his hat with an expletive directed at police.

This resulted in speakers, like Donna Lopez, being turned away before having a chance to address the City Council.

"When this situation developed with the gentleman with the hat, we really were very frustrated," Lopez told Butler.

Lopez recalled that when the crowd began using expletives, police had to shut the meeting down.

But on Tuesday, despite the controversial attire, the meeting continued.

"Just like we have the right to be heard, they have the right to be heard," Lopez said.
