Possible Pipe Bomb Prompts Evacuation At Chapman University

ORANGE (CBSLA.com) — Chapman University's Moulton Hall was evacuated Thursday after a possible pipe bomb was reported outside the building.

A suspicious package was found about 9 a.m. behind Waltmare Theatre, and campus officers who responded to the scene determined it was a possible pipe bomb, Chapman University spokeswoman Mary Platt said.

Bomb squad investigators fired a round into it and when it didn't explode, they declared it inert, Orange police Lt. Fred Lopez said. It's possible the device was a prop from the theater, he said.

By 11 a.m., Moulton Hall was reopened and classes inside the building resumed, Platt said.
