Icy Stretch Of Southbound 5 Freeway Reopens Following Morning Closure

GORMAN (CBSLA.com) — All lanes of the southbound 5 Freeway have reopened following a morning closure due to icy roadway conditions, California Highway Patrol officers said Monday.

CHP issued "Operation Snowflake," which prompted the closure of the freeway between Grapevine Road and Highway 138. The closure was in effect from 3 a.m. to just after 8 a.m., officials said.

CBS2's Jasmine Viel reported the 17-mile stretch of roadway was covered in ice.

Gusty winds that blew through the area caused dangerous driving conditions. Warning signs were posted as a result.

During the closure, officers escorted a handful of vehicles on the roadway.

Shortly after 8 a.m., the area reopened to commuters.
