Officials To Tour SoCal Gas Company's Storage Facility Near Porter Ranch

PORTER RANCH (CBSLA.com) — Local and federal officials Tuesday will tour Southern California Gas Company's storage facility near Porter Ranch.

At 2 p.m., Mayor Eric Garcetti, U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration Administrator Marie Therese Dominguez and U.S. Representatives Brad Sherman and Steve Knight will tour the Aliso Canyon storage facility.

Today's visit marks Moniz's first visit to Porter Ranch since the natural gas leak became one of the state's worst environmental disasters.

Since October 2015, when the leak was reported to authorities, thousands of families have been displaced from their homes due to health concerns.

Students who normally attend two Porter Ranch-area Los Angeles Unified School District campuses were transferred to different schools.

CBS2's Jasmine Viel reported the SoCal Gas Co. crews capped the leak last week.

Crews continue to pump cement into the well to permanently seal the facility.

After state regulators give their approval of inspection, displaced families will have eight days to move back into their homes.
