Presidential Hopeful Donald Trump Has Huge Lead Over Republican Rivals, Poll Finds
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Presidential hopeful Donald Trump has a huge lead over his Republican rivals, according to the latest CBS News/New York Times poll.
The poll shows that Trump has garnered 35 percent support ahead of Ted Cruz and Ben Carson.
The poll, however, was conducted before Trump's controversial comments about banning Muslims from entering the United States.
In spite of Trump's lead, his opponents say they're not concerned.
"I'm not going to hyperventilate about polls and I'm not going to do what the media has fallen into which is we had a major terrorist on U.S. soil a week ago yesterday and now all the talk including the newscast dominated by this plan that's never going to happen," said Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL).
The poll also found that a strong majority of Americans believe ISIS represents a "major threat" to the United States.
Only one in four Americans, in fact, think the fight against the terrorist organization is going well.
Less than half of Americans (44 percent) also believe another terror attack in the country is very likely within the next few months.
That number, according to the networks, is the highest percentage since directly after 9/11.
The poll comes in the wake of the Paris terror attacks, as well as the San Bernardino mass killing in which 14 people were killed and 21 others were injured.
