Police shoot and kill man in San Pedro confrontation

CBS News Los Angeles

As Los Angeles Police Department Harbor Division officers responded to a domestic violence call on New Year's Eve in San Pedro, the suspect was shot and killed by officers after he allegedly fought with them.

Police were called to an apartment at Pacific Avenue and W. 37th Street around 9:40 p.m. for a domestic violence and restraining order violation.  As officers confronted the suspect inside the victim's apartment, he refused to comply with orders, police said.

The suspect has been identified as 39-year-old Lawrence Gonzales. "The officers approached Gonzales, who physically resisted their efforts to detain him," according to the LAPD. "The physical resistance escalated into a violent confrontation where Gonzales attempted to disarm the officers, resulting in an officer-involved shooting."

Two officers were injured, and Gonzales was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead from gunshot wounds. The injured officers were also treated at the hospital.
