Police seek help identifying Gardena hit-and-run driver who killed 70-year-old man in December

Police are searching for the hit-and-run driver that fatally struck a 70-year-old veteran in Gardena in December. 

It happened on Dec. 28 at around 12:40 a.m., near Vermont Avenue and W. 165th Place, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Officers arrived to the scene after learning that a white sedan traveling northbound on Vermont Avenue struck a pedestrian and continued driving. 

The victim, identified as 70-year-old Thomas Michael Cavanaugh, a military resident and LA resident, was rushed to a nearby hospital by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics where he later died. 

A standing reward of up to $50,000 is available to anyone who has information that leads to the identification, arrest and conviction of the alleged hit-and-run driver. 

In hopes of gathering more information from the public, LAPD investigators released video of the crash. As a warning, the video is graphic and can be seen on the department's YouTube channel
