Man With Shotgun Seen Running Near Covina Fire In Deputy-Involved Shooting

COVINA (CBSLA) — An armed man who reportedly ran by firefighters near the scene of a Covina fire was wounded Friday morning in an deputy-involved shooting, authorities say.

The shooting came shortly before 1 a.m. in the 4000 block of North Morada Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, which was investigating the shooting.

L.A. County firefighters were responding to a reported fire in the area, but ended up calling for backup after they saw a man with a shotgun running through a field near the fire, authorities told CBSLA.

The suspect, identified only as a Hispanic male in his forties, was taken to the hospital and was in serious but stable condition as of Friday morning.

It was not immediately clear whether any officers were hurt, nor was it clear what led up to the shooting.

At one point a drone was used to locate the suspect, who was found in the backyard of a home and allegedly shooting a firearm.

Police say the field where the fire was started is known to have homeless encampments, CBSLA's Kara Finnstrom reported.

Multiple homes were evacuated during the standoff.
