Police: Santa Ana Man Threw Makeshift Bottle Bomb At Juvenile

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — Police Thursday announced the arrest of a 37-year-old man who allegedly threw a destructive device at a juvenile in Santa Ana.

Just before 7 p.m. on Wednesday, officers were sent to the 900 block of West 17th Street for report of a fireworks complaint.

Upon their arrival, police learned that a man -- who was later identified as Ryan Matthew Brown, of Santa Ana -- had thrown a makeshift bottle bomb at a victim while he walked in the alley, according to the Santa Ana Police Department.

A preliminary investigation located remnants of the device, which consisted of a legal firework that was modified to explode inside of a bottle.

According to police, Brown fled out of the back of his home prior to their arrival.

Around 10:30 p.m., officers returned to Brown's home and subsequently arrested him for the use of a destructive device causing bodily injury, and willful cruelty to a child with possibly injury or death.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department's Bomb Squad team and the Santa Ana Police Department assisted in the investigation.
