Police Take Car Theft Suspect Into Custody After Pursuit Through San Fernando Valley

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Police Monday afternoon took a suspect into custody after a pursuit through surface streets of the San Fernando Valley.

The pursuit began in the parking lot of a Ralph's grocery store in Van Nuys around 3:15 p.m. as the driver of a black Chevy Volt backed out of the parking lot and quickly began speeding through residential areas of Van Nuys and Sherman Oaks.

Police said they believe the suspect had stolen the car.

The suspect could be seen from Sky9 weaving through busy intersections and speeding through residential neighborhoods.

The suspect at 3:40 p.m. crashed head-on into an LAPD car near a Van Nuys cul-de-sac and officers surrounded the suspect with guns drawn.

Officers smashed a rear window and fired a beanbag at the driver. An officer then smashed the driver-side window and took the suspect into custody.
