Police: Man Commits Suicide During Standoff In Riverside

RIVERSIDE (AP) — A man apparently has shot himself to death after holding authorities at bay inside a Riverside home for some eight hours.

Police say SWAT officers who fired tear gas into an Eastside neighborhood apartment heard a gunshot. They found the 30-year-old dead around 5:30 a.m. Saturday. His name hasn't been released.

Police suspect suicide.

Authorities went to the home around 8:30 p.m. Friday to talk to the man after neighbors said he'd fired a gunshot through the floor of an upstairs apartment a day or two earlier.

Officers arrived after the neighbors confronted the man.

Police say the man told officers he was armed, had his children as hostage and threatened to start a fire and kill them.

However, authorities later determined that his children weren't with him.
