Police Investigating Fatal Hawthorne Hit-And-Run

HAWTHORNE (CBSLA.com) — Police are investigating a hit-and-run that left one man dead and another in critical condition Sunday night.

Investigators say a car full of good Samaritans pulled over to help a driver who crashed into a parked car in the 12100 block of Prairie Avenue in Hawthorne early Sunday morning.

The driver of the vehicle and three others were standing outside of their cars when another vehicle sped onto on the street and hit them, killing one of the drivers.

One person remained in critical condition Sunday evening. Two others suffered minor injuries.

"It's an odd set of circumstances. It's extremely unfortunate that the good Samaritans who actually stopped to help were the victims of the second collision," Hawthorne Police Department Lt. Ti Goetz said.

The suspect fled the scene on foot after the crash.

He was later arrested and is being held on $100,000 bail.

Police believe he may have been under the influence.
