Road rage shooting leaves one hospitalized in Newport Beach

Police are investigating a road rage shooting in Newport Beach after an unknown person opened fire on a Tesla early Wednesday morning.

The shooting happened at around 12:20 a.m. near the Newport Beach Pier, according to the Newport Beach Police Department.

After the incident, the victim, behind the wheel of a Tesla, drove to a nearby Shell gas station, in the 1600 block of Jamboree Road, and waved down a passing police officer.

He told that officer that he was shot during what he believed was a road rage incident.

The man, still unidentified, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment on injuries that police say are non-life-threatening. He has since been released.

"The victim was shot while he was sitting in the driver's seat," said NBPD Sergeant Steve Oberon. "The victim was struck one time in the left shoulder, at which time he drove away."

They say that the shooting was preceded by some sort of incident on the Newport Peninsula just after midnight, which led two carloads of men to the parking lot near the pier, at which point one man got out of a car and opened fire, shooting at least five times.

Investigators are hopeful that the cameras on the victim's Tesla will be able to paint a fuller picture of the sequence of events.

Two passengers of the Tesla remained at the scene where they were interviewed by police.

Investigators did not provide any information on the possible suspects, only that they left the area in a dark-colored sedan.
