Police In Huntington Park Fatally Shoot Homeless Man They Say Attacked Them With Pipe

HUNTINGTON PARK (CBSLA.com) — Police in Huntington Park on Thursday fatally shot a man they said attempted to attack them with a pipe.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department homicide detectives are investigating the incident that took place Thursday around 2 p.m. in the 2400 block of East 57th Street in Huntington Park.

Authorities said Huntington Park police received a call from a work crew that was attempting to clear railroad tracks, but a homeless person was refusing to leave the area.

When Huntington Park officers arrived, they encountered a 35-40-year-old Latino who had armed himself with rocks.

Officers said they used  a stun gun to take the suspect into custody. As one officer attempted to handcuff the suspect, the man allegedly picked up a 5-foot lead pipe. Fearing for his partner's life, a second officer fired his weapon, striking the suspect.

The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The identity of the suspect will be made by the Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.

The investigation is ongoing.
