Police Arrest Convicted Felon After Finding Suspect Hidden In Oxnard Garage

OXNARD (CBSLA.com) — Two Oxnard men were in custody Saturday after police responded to an attempted robbery in a residential area yesterday evening.

According to the Oxnard Police Department, officers were sent around 8:00 p.m. Friday to the area of Ivywood Drive and F Street.

Once on scene, they saw a suspect breaking into the garage of a residence located in the 700 block of Ivywood Drive.

Additional officers responded to the area, and found Andrew Acosta, 19, hiding inside the garage.

Police said he attempted to flee, but was immediately taken into custody.

Acosta was found in possession of several burglary tools and narcotics paraphernalia, authorities explained.

Records indicated he was currently on probation for other burglary-related offenses.

During a preliminary investigation, David Velez, 20, was contacted at the residence where officers found Acosta hiding.

Velez was found in possession of a semi-automatic handgun.

According to police, he is a convicted felon, and is prohibited from possessing a firearm.

Therefore, Velez was taken into custody for being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm not registered to him.
