Pico Rivera, 4 Other Walmart Locations Nationwide Closed For Chronic Plumbing Issues

PICO RIVERA (CBSLA.com) — A 24-hour Pico Rivera Walmart was one of five locations nationwide citing plumbing issues as the reason for closing their doors, the company confirmed Tuesday.

The store at 8500 Washington Boulevard closed at 7 p.m. Monday, according to officials.

"As part of an effort to ensure all of our stores are fully serving the needs of our customers we regularly assess the conditions of our stores. Due to ongoing plumbing issues that will require extensive repairs we are temporarily closing the Pico Rivera store," Walmart Director of Communications Delia Garcia said in a statement.

Garcia said the maintenance work could last about six months.

The company claimed the Pico Rivera store, which opened in 2002 and expanded in 2007, has needed a hundred repairs over the past two years.

The 530 employees were told they will continue to receive regular pay and benefits for 60 days. They also have the opportunity to transfer to another store.

Walmart confirmed at least five locations across the country closed Monday for similar issues.

"We will immediately begin the process to address these issues and intend to reopen the store as soon as all of the plumbing issues are resolved. Deciding to close a store is not a decision we make lightly, but after careful consideration, we felt it was necessary to make these repairs so we can better serve our customers and the community in the long run," Garcia said.
