Man Fatally Shot By Deputies After Chase, Crash In Pico Rivera

PICO RIVERA (CBSLA) — A man was shot and killed by deputies early Thursday morning after a car chase and crash in Pico Rivera.

The shooting happened at about 2 a.m. at Pico Vista, just south of Washington Boulevard, apparently following a chase and a crash into a utility pole at Schooling Road, less than a mile from where the man was fatally shot.

A distraught woman came to the scene and said the man who had been killed was her 22-year-old son, Carmelo Pizarro, and that he had been upset about a recent shooting of a friend.

"They killed my son," Maria Reza said, wailing.

She said Pizarro, who may have gone to a liquor store, leaves behind a 5-year-old daughter.

The chase started as a possible DUI, according to investigators. After the crash into the pole, deputies say they opened fire on him and he took off running. Two more deputies confronted the suspect on Pico Vista, not far from his own home, where he was fatally shot.

Investigators say the suspect had a gun, which was recovered, but he did not fire back. Reza said she did not believe her son had a gun.

No deputies were injured.
