Petition Started Amid Release Of 'Call Me Caitlyn' Halloween Costume
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Still months away, some retailers have started debuting Halloween costumes, including a "Call Me Caitlyn" costume.
The websites, WholesaleHalloweenCostumes.com and AnytimeCostumes.com, are selling the costume they say is modeled after the ensemble Caitlyn Jenner wore on the cover of Vanity Fair earlier this year.
The costume includes a white corset, matching shorts and a sash that reads "Call Me Caitlyn."
One website claims it'll make its wearer "the top news story of the night."
"Transphobic costume" is what a petition on Change.org said about the release of the costume by another retailer.
The petition has garnered 1,053 supporters and calls for the company to stop production of the costume.
"To make a costume out of a marginalized identity reduces that person and community to a stereotype for privileged people to abuse," the petition said in part.
The petition added: "In this case, if you follow through with production of a Caitlyn Jenner costume, cisgender people will purchase it to make fun of her and our community."
Jenner was featured on the cover of Vanity Fair earlier this year with a photograph shot by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz.
