PCH Closure In Malibu Expected To Continue Until Storm Passes

MALIBU (CBSLA.com) — Mud and debris slides forced the closure of Pacific Coast Highway in Ventura County Monday for a second day.

PCH is shut down for a nine-mile stretch between Yerba Buena and Las Posas roads after the ground gave way around 3 p.m. Sunday.

About a dozen vehicles were stranded in the mud that was 3-feet deep in some areas, officials said.

The affected land was burned in the Springs Fire in May 2013, leaving it with little vegetation.

"It's pretty loose terrain up here. When it gets wet and rocky, it just comes right down," said West Hills resident Joshua Nelson.

Caltrans spokesman Patrick Chandler tells KNX 1070's Pete Demetriou the closure could last for awhile.

"At least a couple days. But obviously, until the weather arrives, we don't know how heavy the rain is going to come down or not, so that's going to be the determining factor," he explained.

Motorists are advised to use the Ventura (101) Freeway and canyon roads as an alternate. For traffic conditions, listen to KNX 1070 Newsradio.
