Temporary Outdoor Watering Ban Begins In Pasadena

PASADENA (CBSLA.com) — A temporary outdoor watering ban will begin Thursday in Pasadena.

During the 15-day ban, residents are being prohibited from watering outdoors, including hand watering.

The ban was issued in an effort to conserve water while the Metropolitan Water District (MWD) makes significant upgrades to the Weymouth Water Treatment Plant.

During this time, MWD will suspend all imported water supply to Pasadena and other foothill communities.

City officials explained 60 percent of Pasadena's water supply consists of imported water from MWD. Therefore, the city will not have sufficient supplies to serve water to its customers.

The city, however, may be able to access an alternative imported water supply from MWD half way through the ban. When Pasadena Water and Power confirms that the imported water source is able to provide sufficient and dependable water for the remainder of the ban, the watering restrictions will be lifted.

In the meantime, city officials have issued the following restrictions:

— Watering of lawns, landscapes or other vegetated areas

— Repairing leaks within 24 hours of notification by Pasadena Water and Power

— Filling or re-filling ornamental lakes or ponds, except for necessary extent to sustain aquatic life

— Refilling of residential swimming pools or outdoor spas to no more than one foot

— Installation of new potable water services and issuance of temporary or permanent meters

The city has also implemented the following conservation efforts:

— No mainline construction or scheduled repairs on city facilities

— No scheduled valve exercising or operations

— No large meter installations

— No scheduled water quality flushing

— No new service connections or new temporary meters

On Jan. 25, Pasadena City Council members adopted the Level 4 water shortage supply plan.

The outdoor watering ban will remain in effect until March 10.
