Pasadena officer wounded, suspect killed in shooting

Pasadena police officer recovering after being shot during foot pursuit Monday night

A shootout on Monday night left a Pasadena Police Department officer wounded and a suspect dead. 

Officers responded to the area after reports of a shooting at the Sierra Madre Villa train station on Halstead Street at around 7:30 p.m., according to Pasadena Police Chief Gene Harris.

When officers arrived, they located one man with a gunshot wound to his shoulder.  Other officers found a man matching the suspect's description near the intersection of Sierra Madre Villa Avenue and Del Vina Street.

He ran away from officers and then exchanged gunfire with them, wounding one of the officers, according to Harris.

The suspect died in the neighborhood. Family members identified him on Tuesday as 32-year-old Malcolm Buchanan. They say that he had stopped taking medication for bipolar disorder.

The officer was rushed to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery, according to PPD. The officer, who was identified as five-year department vetaran Bryan Vasquez, remained in stable, but guarded condition as of Tuesday morning after undergoing multiple surgeries for a gunshot wound to the leg.
