'Parranda' Wins $100K Wilshire Stakes At Santa Anita

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — Parranda swept three-wide turning for home to win the $100,000 Wilshire Stakes by 1 1/2 lengths at Santa Anita on Sunday.

Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Parranda ran a mile on the turf in 1:33.48 and paid $6.40, $3.40 and $2.40 in her first start for Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.

Moone's My Name returned $3.80 and $2.80, while Premier Steps was another three-quarters of a length back in third and paid $3 to show.

Parranda had been idle since finishing sixth in the Honey Fox Stakes on March 15 at Florida's Gulfstream Park. The victory, worth $60,000, increased the 5-year-old mare's career earnings to $512,655, with nine wins in 22 starts.

"She's really blossomed since she got here," Hollendorfer said. "Some horses don't like the Florida weather and her coat has really brightened here. She's won a lot of races, so we knew she was a good mare."

Theatre Star, the 2-1 favorite, finished fourth in the field of six.
