TORRANCE (CBSLA.com)  —  The parents of a 22 year old UC Riverside student were coping with a shocking loss, after their son and his friend were killed while trying to change a flat tire. A third man was injured.

"He always tried to help other people," Luong's father told CBS2 News.

Luong pulled over to the shoulder of the 405 at Yukon Avenue about 5 a.m. Sunday. He called friends to help him change a flat tire. A short time later, all three were hit by another vehicle.

Luong was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another victim, identified only as a 19-year-old man from Diamond Bar, was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The third victim suffered head trauma and lacerations.

No arrests have been made.

"He always told me 'Mom, don't worry, I can take care of myself,'" Luong's mother said.
