Oregon Man, 58, Arrested For Allegedly Attempting To Kill Police Officer In Oceanside

OCEANSIDE (AP) — An Oregon man has been arrested for allegedly trying to kill a police officer at a Southern California beach.

Police in Oceanside said 58-year-old Alan Croghan of Beaverton, Oregon was sleeping on the beach when Officer Shannon Payfer approached him Saturday morning and asked for his identification. Police said he repeatedly ignored her commands and lunged at her, knocking her to the ground where she struck her head on a rock.

Police said Croghan then jumped on top of her. They struggled until other officers arrived and subdued him.

Croghan was taken into custody and booked for investigation of attempted murder of a police officer, felony assault on a police officer and assault with injury on a police officer.

Payfer was treated at a hospital and released.
