Open Enrollment Begins For Covered California, Officials Encourage Sign-Ups In East LA

EAST LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Officials with the state-run health insurance exchange Covered California arrived in East Los Angeles on Sunday to encourage uninsured people to shop around for health care plans.

Many uninsured people came to the event for free health check-ups and to shop for insurance options.

The event was just one stop on a statewide bus tour that began on Friday in San Diego in which uninsured people are being encouraged to shop for insurance.

About 1,300,000 people are enrolled for health insurance through the Covered California marketplace, and half of those people pay less than $100 a month, officials said. Many are eligible for subsidies based on income.

Covered California estimates that there are still 2 million uninsured people in California eligible to enroll for health coverage Covered California or who qualify for the state's Medicaid program, Medi-Cal.

Californians can sign-up during Covered California's open enrollment period, which lasts through January 31.
