Only On 9: Security Cameras Catch Vandal Slashing Tires in Ventura

VENTURA (CBSLA.com) –  Police in Ventura are investigating a tire-slashing spree. But one vandal may not be on the lam long after security cameras caught the man in the act.

Manny Marks was about to go to work Tuesday morning when he discovered that two of his tires had been slashed. And so were two of the tires of his wife's car.

"He got four tires this time," Marks said.

Over the last six months, the Marks said they had 17 tires punctured.

So they installed security cameras, which caught the slasher in the act. The surveillance video shows the shirtless suspect wearing a wide brimmed hat.

"I was actually kind of surprised that someone went ahead and continued to slash tires and vandalize the vehicles even with the cameras," Marks said.

Police said a total of 15 tires were slashed along Main Street near Downtown Ventura.

It's not clear what kind of weapon was used to puncture the Marks' tires.

According to police, there have been two similar tire-slashing sprees within the last month. But it's not clear if they are related.

Neighbor Alissa Bautista's car was also hit. "It's a little frustrating definitely because vehicles aren't cheap," she said.

Police believe the attacks were random. They said they will be patrolling the area more frequently until the culprit is caught.

Even though Marks has now shelled out more than $6,000 in repairs, he said he still wants the tire slasher to find help.

"This is an opportunity to try and help somebody that needs help if they're doing this," Marks said.
