A gunman opened fire on a white Chevrolet sedan on east 154th Street and South Avalon Boulevard just before 11 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The Chevrolet continued for about a half-mile before coming to a stop in the 15000 block of Avalon Boulevard.

The driver, a man, was rushed by ambulance to a hospital with critical injuries, a sheriff's spokesperson said.

Two boys in the car, ages 14 and 11, were also wounded. One boy was struck in the thigh and the second was grazed by a bullet to the abdomen. Both were treated and released.

The boys are the sons of the driver's girlfriend, the spokesperson said. The mother happened to be in a separate vehicle behind them at the time of the shooting.

In cell phone video obtained by CBSNLA, the victim's girlfriend can be heard screaming. Her two sons are then shown being loaded into a dark sedan and driven away, likely to a hospital. The woman then remained with her boyfriend until deputies and paramedics arrived on scene.

"The mother was in a car behind them when the shooting occurred," sheriff's Lt. Derrick Alfred told reporters. "So she followed the car here after the shooting, (the car) came to rest. She stayed with the victim and sent the two boys to a local hospital."

A motive for the shooting was not confirmed. No arrests have been made.

It's unclear if investigators have identified a suspect.
