One Man Killed, 3 Wounded In Shooting At Mother's Day Party In Hollywood
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – One man was killed and three other men wounded when gunfire erupted at a large outdoor Mother's Day celebration in Hollywood late Sunday night.
The shooting occurred in the 6100 block of Afton Place at 10:15 p.m., in an area near Sunset Gower Studios, where a large family was holding a Mother's Day gathering.
According to Los Angeles police, officers were driving in the area when they heard gunshots and arrived to find a 29-year-old man dead at the scene.
Three other men, were rushed to nearby hospitals with gunshot wounds. As of Monday morning, at least one remained in critical condition.
Police learned that two gunmen who were not attendees at the party walked up, opened fire, and fled. One of the victims may have returned fire. At least 30 shots were fired.
"It's the most egregious thing that you can do, indiscriminate fire into any kind of party," LAPD Lt. John Radtke told reporters Monday morning. "We're very fortunate, in many of these incidents, that we don't have little kids or babies being killed inside of residents. So as bad as this is, unfortunately, it could have been worse."
Police said some of the victims may be related, the oldest of which was a 50-years-old man.
A crowd, which included some grieving family members, gathered and became unruly as police were trying to secure the area in the early morning hours Monday. Several streets were shut down in the area of Afton Place and Gower Street while investigators combed the scene.
The victims appeared to have been targeted, police said. However, there was no word on a motive or whether it may have been gang-related.
