Just after 10 p.m. the victims were standing on a sidewalk outside an apartment building in the 100 block of West 1st Street, near L.A. City Hall, when a car drove by and a suspect opened fire.

Jessica Woodward, the injured man's sister, told CBSLA that she and her brother were leaving a Black Lives Matter protest when a stranger rushed up to them and asked for help.

At that point, Woodward says, a van pulled up, a door opened and a man inside opened fire on them, striking her brother and the stranger.

One man died at the scene and the second man, Woodward's brother, was rushed to a hospital with a leg injury. At last report he was in stable condition.

There was no word on a motive in the shooting or whether it was gang-related. There was no description of the suspects or how many people were in the van.
