The crash occurred in the 1800 block of Vine Street just after 3:30 a.m.

According to Los Angeles police, a driver who was coming off the southbound 101 Freeway lost control on the Vine Street offramp. The car hit a curb, crashed through a guardrail and fence, and slammed into some trees in the backyard of an apartment building.

A person who was in the yard at the time was struck and killed, police said. It's unclear if the victim lived in the apartment building or was homeless. The victim's name was not immediately released.

The exact circumstances of the crash were unclear. There was no word regarding whether alcohol or drugs were a factor.

"We have a lot of these that are unnecessary every night, here and in the valley, all over the city," LAPD Capt. Brian Wendling said. "It's just been a plague since COVID hit, people are driving a lot faster and not controlling their vehicles. And it's very, very sad."
