1 Dead After Small Plane Plunges Into Water Off Point Mugu

VENTURA (CBSLA.com) — An ultra light air plane carrying two people crashed into the water off Point Mugu, killing one man, authorities said.

The crash occurred Saturday afternoon and was witnessed by two men camping who rushed to help under dangerous conditions.

One man was swimming to shore and was saved and later said the aircraft had engine trouble. "The waves were really strong breaking against the rocks," Alex Daniels, who helped the man to shore, said.

The other man was took weak to swim and was found floating near the wreckage. John Pitzer camping along with Daniels is a former harbor officer of 30 years and his instincts kicked in.

"By the time I got to him he was faced down in the water and I had to start giving him some resuscitation efforts."

An official with the Ventura County Sheriff's Office said that man later died at the hospital.

The NTSB is investigating the crash.
