Officials To Ban Bulky Item Dumping At LA City Parks
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — City officials are looking at ways to clean up what they say is a messy situation at parks across Los Angeles.
KNX 1070's Margaret Carrero reports the City Attorney's office has been asked to draft a law that would prohibit dumping sofas, mattresses and other bulky items in city parks without a permit.
Councilman Mike Bonin called on members of the Arts Parks, Health, Aging and River Committee in November to outlaw any bulky item drop-offs on park grounds without a permit in an effort to eliminate the sight of abandoned furniture in Venice and other parts of the city.
In a motion (PDF) dated Nov. 7, Bonin described the problem as a quality-of-life issue that poses new challenges to the city's park maintenance efforts.
"The large volume of personal property regularly left in City parks after closing causes undue maintenance burdens and expense for the Department of Recreation and Parks, and is a burden that can be prevented so that all may enjoy our City's parks in an appropriate and supportive manner," Bonin wrote.
The city currently offers online and telephone services for residents to request a bulky item pickup by calling 800-773-2489 or visiting the city's Bureau of Sanitation website.
