Officers Shoot Suspect In South Gate; 2 Remain At Large

SOUTH GATE (CBSLA.com) — Police were involved in an officer-involved shooting on Monday that occurred in South Gate.

Shortly before 11:45 p.m. on Sunday, officers were sent to a home located in the 5200 block of Katella Road near Wright Road for report of a burglary that was underway.

Upon their arrival, officers became involved in a shooting with a burglary suspect, according to the South Gate Police Department.

Paramedics transported the suspect to a hospital where he underwent surgery. Officials said he remains in stable condition and is expected to survive.

A preliminary investigation revealed homeowners noticed three Hispanic men in their backyard. The suspects proceeded to pull out guns when the four adults went outside to confront them. A fight subsequently ensued.

Two of the suspects were able to jump over the wall and flee from the scene. Police said they remain at large and are believed to be armed.

Authorities said a third suspect who was armed wrestled with the homeowner before he fell into a pool. After jumping over the wall, he was confronted by police and was shot.

"He was armed with a handgun and once he was shot he continued to run," said Lt. John Corina. "He was found later on in the containment area that they set up, hiding beneath a vehicle near a yard on the next street over."

The victims said they did not recognize the suspects.

Three children were reportedly inside of the home when the incident occurred, however, no injuries were reported.

Two handguns were recovered at the scene.
