Officers Investigate Pedestrian Fatality On Freeway In Carson
CARSON (CBSLA.com) — Officers sought the public's help Sunday with identifying a driver who fatally struck a pedestrian on the southbound 405 Freeway overnight.
According to the California Highway Patrol, officers were sent to the Wilmington Avenue exit on the freeway around 2:25 a.m. for report of someone running over something.
Police told KCAL9's Joy Benedict there were several body parts found in multiple lanes when they arrived on the horrific scene.
Officers explained they believe a 35-year-old man pulled to the side of the road due to troubles with his 2003 BMW after possibly running out of gasoline on the freeway.
When the victim exited his vehicle, the driver of a white vehicle struck him. The suspect vehicle did not stop, call police, or alert drivers traveling behind him to what happened.
The victim was subsequently struck by an unknown amount of vehicles after being run over by the suspect vehicle.
"We believe it's a white vehicle in color, however, we don't know the make or model at this point," said CHP Sgt. Tim Hall.
"It did cause significant damage that struck, along with the pedestrian, and appears to have left some paint trail on the vehicle," Hall added.
No SigAlert was issued for the area, however, three southbound lanes remained closed for several hours.
The victim's identity is being withheld pending family notification.
