Police Fatally Shoot Knife Wielding Man In Long Beach

LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Police Monday investigated the circumstance surrounding a deadly officer-involved shooting that took place in Long Beach.

Officers responded around 9:15 p.m. Sunday to the 1600 block of Obispo Avenue for report of an armed suicidal man, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Upon their arrival, authorities learned the man was armed with a handgun and wished to commit "suicide by cop."

About an hour later, a team of officers began verbal negotiations with the suspect.

At one point, the man charged at officers with a knife, and an officer-involved shooting subsequently occurred.

The suspect was struck by gunfire and fell to the ground.

Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. The suspect's identity is being withheld pending family notification.

CBS2's Joy Benedict reported the man was a Veteran and a father.

No officers sustained injuries during the shooting.

Detectives recovered a large knife at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.
