Carjacking Suspect Fatally Shot By Officer In South Gate

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A  suspect -- whom authorities said tried to carjack two different motorists -- was fatally shot by officers in South Gate Sunday morning.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau, detectives were sent around 4:58 a.m. to the 8900 block of Kauffman Avenue to investigate the circumstances around the officer-involved shooting.

About an hour before officers arrived on scene, a male suspect allegedly attempted to carjack a driver at a Jack in the Box restaurant, located in the 8900 block of Atlantic Avenue.

While talking to officers, the would-be carjack victim said they spotted the suspect who apparently returned to the scene of the crime.

The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Brian Barbosa, ran from officers and attempted a second carjacking at Annetta Avenue, authorities said.

He failed in the second carjacking as well and ran into a residential neighborhood in the area of Annetta Avenue and Kauffman Avenue.

Barbosa emerged on the east sidewalk in the 8900 block of Kauffman Avenue, armed with a handgun.

He allegedly confronted officers, which subsequently prompted an officer-involved shooting.

Barbosa was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other injuries were reported.
