Off-Duty LAPD Officer Killed In Torrance Motorcycle Crash

TORRANCE (CBSLA.com)  —   A 24-year-old off-duty LAPD officer was killed in a motorcycle accident Saturday evening, according to authorities.

The officer was declared dead at the scene.

The accident occurred around 4:30 p.m. at 234th Street and Western Avenue, according to Torrance Police Lt. Brian O'Steen.

"The driver of the car was about to turn northbound on Western (from 234th Street) and the motorcyclist was southbound on Western," O'Steen said.

The motorcyclist T-boned the car, he said, suffering fatal injuries.

The LAPD has lost six officers this year, one of an apparent heart attack and five in traffic-related accidents. Two officers were killed on the same road in Beverly Hills by separate trucks several weeks apart.

Western Avenue was closed for the investigation for about five hours, O'Steen said.

Commander Andrew Smith of the LAPD said the officer was assigned to the Southwest division and he was on the force less than two years.

His name will be withheld until his next of kin is notified.
