Flames Tear Through OC Storage Unit Causing Partial Roof Collapse

LAGUNA HILLS (CBSLA) — Firefighters are working to determine the cause of a fire at a public storage facility in Laguna Hills.

Flames broke out around 3:30 a.m. Sunday at the Public Storage Facility in the 25000 block of Costeau Street.

Photos of the fire shared by the Orange County Fire Authority show flames tearing through the roof of one unit and spreading across the others at the facility.

Firefighters say part of the roof and walls collapsed.

CBS2's Laurie Perez reported from the location where she said 136  storage units were destroyed.

More than 100 firefighters battled the blaze.

Throughout the day, anxious property owners arrived to find it their units were spared.

No one was hurt.

Captain Steve Copcialdi of the Orange County Fire Authority said that was fortunate.

"You saw when the roof collapsed how dangerous it was. If someone was under there they would have easily been injured or killed," he said.

Perez spoke to the Cruz family who lost a lifetime of mementos being stored in one of the unites.

"There's a huge chunk of memories and family things that's well never see," said Tim Cruz, "It's just, it's just stuff but yeah, it'll be a difficult day."

Pam Norris lost two units of her home staging business.

"We saw it on the news this morning," she says, "and now had to see it in person. It's definitely upsetting. There's about four houses of furniture in there, complete houses."
