LAPD shoots allegedly armed man in North Hills

Los Angeles police fatally shot a man who was allegedly armed in the North Hills area on Wednesday.

Officers were called to the intersection of Parthenia Street and Orion Avenue underneath the 405 Freeway at around 5:20 p.m. after learning of a man who was possibly armed with a gun, Los Angeles Police Department officials told CBS News Los Angeles.

Police said that witnesses called to report a man who was armed with both a gun and a beer bottle as he made threats.

Arriving officers said that they attempted to speak with the man, but when he wouldn't comply with their commands and continued to move towards them while armed, they opened fire.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he later died. He has since been identified as 50-year-old Gustavo Ramirez.

Police said that they recovered what they thought was a handgun at the scene.

"`The handgun used by Ramirez was later determined to be a black plastic replica," police said.

No other injuries were reported in the incident.
