No Flooding Reported Along The Coast After King Tide Event

HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBSLA.com) — There was no flooding reported Thursday as extremely high tides threatened beachfront properties.

The "King Tides" occur a couple of times a year when the earth, moon and sun all line up in a way that increases the gravitational pull on oceans, which results in water levels rising several feet above normal.

"I'd say five, six feet above normal. Usually on a high tide it comes around 20 feet out, but it was really high today," Huntington Beach resident Joe Janicke said.

A group called the California King Tides Initiative used Thursday's King Tide event to encourage Californians to plan ahead and raise awareness about the future of the state and what may happen if sea levels continue to rise as projected including more street, beach and wetland flooding.

Another event has been projected to take place on Jan. 29.
