Officials Identify Bicyclist Killed In Hit-And-Run Crash In Newhall

NEWHALL (CBSLA.com) — Officials Thursday released the identity of a 53-year-old bicyclist who was killed in an apparent hit-and-run collision near Santa Clarita.

According to the coroner's office, Rod Bennett, of Valencia, was fatally struck by a dark colored Mazda 3 around 4:40 p.m. Wednesday in the 20100 block of Placerita Canyon Road near Highway 14.

Bennett was a math teacher and a band leader at Arroyo Seco Junior High School, according to the school district.

Santa Clarita Valley sheriff's deputies said the Mazda has a roof rack and a possible broken windshield.

The hit-and-run driver was last seen heading eastbound on Placerita Canyon Road, authorities said.

The crash is being investigated by California Highway Patrol officers.
