Newbury Park High School Students Mourn Athlete Fatally Stabbed In Taco Bell Parking Lot

NEWBURY PARK (CBSLA.com) — Grief counselors were available on Tuesday for students at Newbury Park High School after a 16-year-old student was fatally stabbed at a Taco Bell parking lot.

Daniel Morales, a football player, died after being stabbed Monday in the parking lot of the fast-food restaurant on Flynn Road in Camarillo.

The Conejo Valley Unified School District superintendent confirmed that Morales, who had transferred to the school from Camarillo High, had died Tuesday morning after being stabbed Monday.

Upon learning the news, heartbroken teammates tweeted messages. One read: "Hope you['re] up there cheering us on because now this is all for you."

"I went to middle school with him," Kevin Norgaard, a classmate, said. "He's my neighbor actually. He's actually a nice guy. I knew him."

Deputies with Ventura County say Morales was stabbed during a dispute between two groups of people. Detectives later arrested Tyler James Ostertag, 20, of Camarillo in connection with the case.

Deputies confirm Ostertag had prior run-ins with their department, but described them as not particularly violent offenses.

"He was really good at football and we miss him," Norgaard said of Morales.
