New Video Surfaces Showing Moments Before Attack Involving Lifeguard In Venice

VENICE (CBSLA.com) — New video has surfaced showing the moments before a confrontation unfolded between a lifeguard and a group of people on the Venice Beach pier.

Meagan Ryana captured the video on her phone while on vacation last Thursday evening.

In the clip, one man is seen attempting to climb the lifeguard tower before being pulled down.

At one point, words were apparently exchanged between the lifeguard and a woman below, before the lifeguard is seen allegedly dumping water on the group.

"I laughed at the time but if a lifeguard threw water on me, I'd be pretty upset too," Ryana said.

The video shows the situation escalating with the woman hit with water being held back by a man during a fit of anger.

Footage last week of the altercation went viral and had showed the lifeguard climbing down from the tower before a confrontation erupted.

Capt. Kenichi Haskett at the Los Angeles County Lifeguard Headquarters in Hermosa Beach says the department is working with the Los Angeles Police Department in its criminal investigation.

"Unfortunately what transpired in that video still needs, you know, the formal process of fact-finding. That's one angle," Haskett said.

Haskett says it's too early to tell whether the lifeguard will be disciplined, but explains that dealing with a fight involving a lifeguard is something he hasn't seen during his 20-year career.

"Please be patient with us until we gather all the necessary information we need," Haskett said.

"It was unprofessional on the lifeguard's part to throw water on someone," Ryana said.

Two men and a woman were arrested in connection with the confrontation. The LAPD says all three have been released on bail.

The lifeguard has been placed on paid medical leave due to cuts, bruises, and injuries he sustained as a result of the incident.
