Neglected Dogs Improving After Rescue

RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) — Dogs rescued in Riverside County last month are improving and gaining weight, according to the Riverside County Department of Animal Services.

The dogs were rescued from a property in the Lake Matthews area July 18.

About a dozen dogs were found dead. Dozens more were alive but emaciated. They were taken to the San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus, where they're being nursed back to health.

A Riverside County animal feed company, Starr Milling, donated 800 pounds of food to help with the recovery effort.

"Stories like this always pull at your heart," said Paul Cramer, the company's sales director. "Being so close, we felt obligated to do what we could to help in any way we could."

Smaller donations of blankets and food were brought to the shelter by local families after news of the rescue spread.

The dogs are doing well and showing healthy weight gains, according to Riverside County veterinarians.

A week after the dogs were rescued, Riverside County authorities identified two possible suspects in the case. No arrests have been announced.
