Thousands Of Jobs Available In State Government, Officials Say

LOS ANGELES (KNX1070) — Officials say thousands of jobs are currently available and thousands more are expected to open as 40 percent of state employees are eligible to retire.

"What we're looking at doing is filling a lot of positions in a hurry," Jim Zamora with the California Department of Human Resources told Ed Mertz of KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO.

As Mertz reports, there are currently more than 3,800 vacancies, most of which are in the Sacramento area. About 500 are in Southern California, however.

Zamora said the hiring process for the service-related jobs oftentimes takes months.

"It's reliable, middle-class job that's stable and has very good benefits," he added.

Mertz reports that there are nearly 250 different agencies to choose from.

Right now, Mertz says, some of the highest demand is in the Department of Veteran Affairs, where more than 150 job openings are posted and the Department of Motor Vehicles, which has more than 100 jobs available.

Other job openings include: 16 vacancies at San Quentin State Prison, as well as at the Franchise Tax Board; 17 openings with the Public Utilities Commission; and 22 vacancies with the High Speed Rail Commission.
