Microsoft Demos 'Star Wars'-Style 'Holoportation' Technology

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) - Microsoft's "Holoportation" demo proves that being in the same room with loved ones, co-workers, or friends across the country or across the world in person may soon become a reality.

Microsoft Research's manager Shahram Izadi demonstrated in a video how he was able to hang out with co-workers and his daughter using the holographic device.

The technology can "fundamentally change the way that people will communicate in the future," Izadi stated in the video.

"Imagine being able to teleport to any place, with anyone, at any time," said Izadi in the video. "That's what Holoportation is all about."

In order to set up the technology , users must have a HoloLens device in order to see the holograms in real-time, as well as be in a room with multiple 3D cameras.

Users won't be able to see other people using this technology unless they are wearing a HoloLens.  In order to see another person's holographic face, the user will have to take off their headset.

One of the coolest functions is that after the user is done conversing on the HoloLens, they can play back and even resize the recent interaction so that it can be displayed on any surface or object in the room.
