Mayor Garcetti Was Passenger In LAPD Vehicle That Struck Pedestrian In Downtown LA
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Mayor Eric Garcetti was a passenger in a Los Angeles Police Department vehicle that struck a pedestrian Tuesday.
City officials say he was not hurt in the accident, which occurred just steps from City Hall.
The accident happened at about 12:20 p.m. as the vehicle was heading eastbound on 2nd Street near Spring Street in downtown Los Angeles, a city spokesman said.
Garcetti was on the phone and did not witness the accident, officials said. He has since been interviewed by LAPD investigators.
Los Angeles firefighters took the pedestrian, a 59-year-old female, to a hospital. The woman's name has not been released, and is reported to be in moderate condition at an area hospital.
The woman reportedly entered the street on a red light and red cross signal, and was outside of the crosswalk as cars were turning right, according to LAPD officers.
A camera from the Los Angeles Times building captured the scene on camera, but police officials say they do not have any video that they can currently share.
In a statement, Garcetti said, "I'm very concerned about her and wish her a speedy recovery. I look forward to speaking with her soon."
